![]() Nadine Sez The Godmother of Rock comments on novelty songs.
Hi Nadine, I heard you on KFOG last week — very cool! I have a question for you. I have a song that I think is very timely and extremely marketable. It has to do with being laid off. Any suggestions on how to get it to radio or market it to people that have been laid off? -Groovy Judy, San Francisco, Ca. Dear Judy, You know, Judy, novelty songs are such a long-shot. They are best performed live to an appreciative audience. The problem is not the song or music, but the fact that commercial radio rarely plays indie or unsupported music. If you try to get a major artist to cover it, the biggest problem is getting someone to put such a long-shot song on an expensive record. Also, the material may be perceived as time sensitive, or regional based, which would also prohibit its chances. I might suggest that you try to make it an Internet phenomenon — with a vast number of downloads through word of mouth, especially to laid-off workers and job help websites. Lastly you might contact publishers who specialize in country artists, since country radio is a bit more open to the novelty tune. Good luck,
